I'm getting very into the idea of growing food in my soon-to-be back garden. So I planted a whole lot of mielies (corn) in a seedling tray two weeks ago. I planted them with my daughter so she could also watch them grow, and she's been watering them every day.
Mielies are completely psycho growers!! I planted them about 5cm down, as per the instructions on the packet, and the little shoots were breaking the surface a few days later.
In the words of little Zeb - "There came plants!!"
We can't move into our new house for an additional month now, and the mielie plants are already a good 15cm high in their little tray. I'm considering planting them out in the garden, or on the verge so that passers-by get a free meal in December.

ha, so much for wordpress. I went to your workblog, read that whole thing about grids and satellites and error and stuff, and wanted to leave a comment. It requires my email address! No way. So I'll leave the comment here.
My brother, as you know, is a trained land surveyor with years of surveying experience, who now works as a surveying software developer. I was wondering whether he could ever help you if you have queries related to spatial systems and the programming associated therewith. Just a thought...
Hooray for the mielies!
Can I assume from the lack of shrieks of alarm that your current landlords don't mind extending your lease a bit? Or, um, I'm wondering whether I'm confusing you with other friends who're moving, did you actually have an overlap of new house / old house and that overlap has simply been taken away?
Yup - always had an overlap. The lease runs until mid-December. We wanted to take occupation of the new place earlier to do some renovations - but I was always only planning to move the mielies early, not the whole family :).
